Rob Woodin
Teaching Philosophy
Rob believes in teaching students how to teach themselves. His coaching focuses on an efficient approach to practice, using natural and healthy techniques, and well-rounded repertoire balanced in a multitude of styles in classical, musical theater, jazz, pop, and contemporary music. In lessons he focuses on building an energetic and productive technique of vocal tone, expressive musicianship, and an understanding of musical theory, sight-singing, ear training, and harmonic awareness.
Biography
Rob Woodin is a versatile lyric baritone and experienced voice instructor based in the Boston area. Since 2008, he has been teaching voice, with current positions at Brookline Music School, Boston College, and Groton Hill Music. His teaching repertoire includes private lessons, musical theater camps, and specialized classes like “Broadway Stars,” focusing on creating new productions. Rob is a member of NATS and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
As a performer, Rob has appeared with numerous opera companies and orchestras. Notable roles include the title character in Odyssey Opera’s “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” Don Giovanni and Papageno with Boston Opera Collaborative, and Mercutio in New Jersey Opera’s “Romeo et Juliette.” He has also been involved in children’s outreach programs, performing roles such as the Wolf and Huntsman in “Little Red Riding Hood” and Daddy Warbucks in “Annie.”
Rob’s concert experience is equally impressive, with solo appearances in major works like Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Haydn’s Creation with various choruses and orchestras. He has given recitals at Indian Hill Music, showcasing a wide range of repertoire from Finzi to French art songs and musical theater selections.
In addition to his performance and teaching career, Rob serves as a cantor and director of music at Sacred Heart Church in Waltham, MA, and as a baritone choral fellow at Old South Church in Boston. His diverse experiences in opera, concert work, and sacred music inform his approach to teaching, allowing him to guide students across various vocal styles and performance contexts.
