Summer Flute Institute
Ages 10+
Friday, June 26 at 1:00pm - Sunday, June 28 at 12:30pm
The Summer Flute Institute is an opportunity for flutists ages 10 to adult to engage in interactive workshops on a variety of topics expanding on the techniques of flute playing and performance presented by BMS and guest faculty.
This year’s workshop lineup includes:
- Beauty and the Beast: Taming and Learning to Love the Piccolo
- Tapping into the Power of Harmonics
- It All Comes Back To Air
Flutistry Boston will host an instrument demonstration table for students to try their finest flutes. Participants will also have the opportunity to play in ensembles and participate in a final performance on Sunday, June 28.
Faculty
Allison Parramore
Flutist Allison Parramore is a versatile performer and dedicated educator with a multifaceted career as an orchestral, chamber, and solo musician, freelance artist, and teacher in higher education.
As an orchestral musician, she holds positions with the Boston Festival Orchestra and the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, and formerly with the Missouri Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with the Boston Symphony, Pops, and Esplanade Orchestras, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Boston Ballet, Boston Lyric Opera, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Boston Philharmonic, Odyssey Opera, Portland Symphony, Albany Symphony, New Haven Symphony, New Bedford Symphony, Cape Symphony, and the Midland-Odessa Symphony, among others. Parramore has appeared as soloist with the Boston Festival Orchestra, Boston’s Phoenix Orchestra, and the University of Rhode Island Symphony Orchestra.
Her awards include first prize in the 35th Annual James Pappoutsakis Flute Competition, resulting in a solo debut recital at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, first prize of the Boston Woodwind Society Doriot Dwyer Competition, third prize in the Upper Midwest Flute Association Young Artist Competition, and appearances at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Astral Artists National Auditions, and the Plowman Chamber Music Competition.
As a solo and chamber artist, Parramore has been a featured performer in the Austin Flute Festival, Rochester Flute Association, and Upper Midwest Flute Association presenting a collaborative recital: Raise Their Voices: Celebrating Female Composers, and has performed at the Tanglewood Music Center Festival of Contemporary Music, Phoenix Orchestra and Boston Festival Orchestra Chamber Series, and the Boston Conservatory New Music Festival.
An active and passionate educator, Allison Parramore serves as flute faculty at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, the University of Rhode Island, and Ithaca College. She is a frequent guest performer and educator and has given several lectures and masterclasses at universities and conservatories throughout the United States, including her presentation, Freelancing and Entrepreneurship: navigating the field from student to full-time music professional. She has also been a guest educator for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra Youth Orchestra, and a presenter at the Flute Society of Berklee and the New Jersey Flute Society. Parramore currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Boston Woodwind Society, the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition, and formerly the Rochester Flute Association.
In the summers, Parramore serves on the flute faculty at the New England Conservatory Summer Orchestral Institute, a four-week full symphony orchestra training program, and performs with the Boston Festival Orchestra during their Mainstage Summer Series. She has performed at the Hamptons Music Festival, the Tanglewood Music Center, the Texas Music Festival, the Lake Tahoe Music Festival, and was the teaching assistant at the Brevard Music Center.
Allison Parramore’s primary teachers include Linda Toote, Elizabeth Rowe, Susan Thomas, and Jacqueline Goudey. She holds degrees from The Boston Conservatory and the University of Rhode Island, where she won the Kingston Chamber Music Award, the Presser Scholarship, the President Award for Musical Excellence, and the 2010 Concerto Competition.
Anthea Kechley
Ms. Kechley is an accomplished flutist and educator with a diverse background in performance and teaching. Upon completing her Bachelor of Music Degree, she was immediately appointed as flute faculty and Director of Flute Choir at Williams College. Her teaching career has since expanded to include positions at Miami Arts Charter School, Miami Music Project, and the Harmony Program in New York City, the latter two based on Venezuela’s El Sistema model. Ms. Kechley’s pedagogical approach is deeply influenced by the Suzuki method, which she studied both as a student and teacher under her mother, Jerilee Kechley.
Ms. Kechley has had the privilege of collaborating with renowned classical musicians such as Lang Lang, Andrea Bocelli, and Itzhak Perlman. Her musical education was further enriched through participation in prestigious programs including Aspen Music Festival and School, Brevard Music Center, and Texas Music Festival.
Her approach to flute performance and pedagogy has been significantly shaped by Keith Underwood, Nadine Asin, Kim Lorimier, and Jerilee Kechley. Through her multifaceted career, Ms. Kechley continues to inspire both students and audiences with her passion for music and dedication to excellence.
Hayley Miller
As an educator, Miller has given guest master classes, lessons and performances at the Eastman School of Music, Boston University, the University of North Texas, University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Christian University, as well as through the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, Rochester Flute Association, and Austin Flute Society. In addition to collegiate teaching, Miller enjoys working with middle and high school students and has served as a mentor with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, as well as guest appearances at local high schools. Previously, Miller served as the Flute Instructor at the Eastman Community School of Music. With 15 years of teaching experience, she offers personalized lessons to students of all ages and skill sets.
Miller is Haynes Performing Artist and plays on a rose gold Haynes Fusion.
Matthew Lee
Matthew Lee, is a Boston based, New Zealand flutist, conductor and educator. Frequently performing around New England and beyond, Matthew is a regular performer with the Portland (Maine) Symphony Orchestra, Boston Ballet Orchestra and the GRAMMY Award winning Albany Symphony Orchestra, he also performed with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra and the Springfield (MA) Symphony Orchestra, for many years was the Piccolo player (as well as acting Principal on many occasions) of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (NZ). Matthew has performed in views such as the Sydney Opera House, Boston Symphony Hall and New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall.
