Explore the vibrant world of rhythm and texture in this engaging introduction to percussion instruments! Under the guidance of Scott Pittman, experienced BMS faculty member and versatile multi-instrumentalist, students will discover the diverse family of percussion and develop fundamental techniques across multiple instruments.

This flexible, make-your-own-schedule program invites students to explore the rich variety of percussion instruments and their unique roles in musical expression. Through personalized instruction and hands-on experience, participants will build a strong rhythmic foundation while developing an appreciation for the percussionist’s vital contribution to musical ensembles.

  • Mallet Percussion: Experience the melodic possibilities of xylophone, glockenspiel and other tuned percussion instruments
  • Drum Kit: Learn essential patterns and techniques that form the rhythmic backbone of contemporary music
  • Hand Percussion: Explore congas, bongos, wood blocks, cowbells, shakers, and other hand percussion instruments that add texture and depth

Each session builds upon fundamental concepts while allowing students to focus on instruments that spark their interest. This comprehensive introduction provides an excellent foundation for further musical study while developing coordination, timing, and rhythmic awareness.

Intro to Percussion can be taken as a shared class for pre-formed pairs. BMS does not match students for shared Passion Projects.
