Thomas Rodman
Teaching Philosophy
I strive to share the knowledge I have been fortunate to receive, with the hope of inspiring others as I have been. My teaching begins with building a solid foundation in technique and developing the ear to recognize a beautiful, consistent tone. Once that groundwork is laid, we move into the fun and creative process of learning music—something I view as a puzzle to be explored, not simply solved. Like any good puzzle, progress comes from curiosity and experimentation, rather than being handed the answers. In each lesson, I find it crucial to maintain a balance of challenge and encouragement to keep the energy, and the student-teacher relationship, motivating and positive. I truly treasure music, and my goal is to equip every student—and their parents—with the tools they need for success.
Biography
Thomas Rodman has been performing and teaching professionally in New England for over 10 years as an orchestral musician, chamber player and solo recitalist. His instrumental studies began with piano at the age of 9, and cello soon followed (thanks Yo-Yo Ma!). As a multi instrumentalist, he also plays guitar, bass guitar, ukelele and viola da gamba. Although his training is rooted in the classical tradition, Thomas loves and enjoys all types of music and incorporates different genres to aid in his music making. Thomas has attended the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, Music From Salem, Summer Institute of Contemporary Performance Practice and Brevard Music Center, where he worked with Steven Pologe and Benjamin Karp. His primary teachers include Nan Kemberling, Greg Sauer, Martha Gerschefski, and Andrew Mark. Thomas has also been fortunate to participate in masterclasses and lessons with Earl Carlyss, Timothy Eddy and Johannes Moser. He is currently in the process of becoming SAA certified in Book 1 and is excited to accept suzuki students very soon!
