Masako Yotsugi
Teaching Philosophy
Music is a universal language. To be able to express ourselves through music, we have to learn skills first to play the instrument, read the music, and learn harmony and theory. My mentor at Berklee, Ray Santisi who taught Keith Jarrett, Diana Krall, Joe Zawinal, Makoto Ozone, and more used to say, “Let’s develop our skills, so we can support our instinct.” Playing music is meditative and a healthy thing. I am very lucky to have a therapeutic job and I want to help people to have music in their life – no matter what their profession is/would be.
Biography
Masako is a versatile pianist and instructor who seamlessly blends classical training with jazz and contemporary styles. Her teaching approach is comprehensive and tailored to each student’s level and interests.
For students who have mastered fundamental classical skills, Masako offers advanced jazz instruction. Her method encompasses a wide range of techniques, including left-hand activity, right-hand harmonization of melody, voicing techniques, improvisation, re-harmonization, and accompaniment for vocal or instrumental pieces. This holistic approach aims to create a fullness of sound necessary for solo jazz piano and can be applied to various styles such as jazz, pop, and contemporary rock.
Masako’s performance career is equally diverse and impressive. She was the resident pianist at the prestigious Boston Harbor Hotel and Joe Tecce’s in the North End, where she showcased her extensive knowledge of the American Songbook and contemporary music. Her performances at these venues not only entertained guests but also demonstrated her ability to adapt to different musical contexts and audiences.
In addition to her solo work, Masako frequently collaborates with other musicians. Most notably, she works with cellist Fabrizio Mazzetta, with whom she recently co-founded BÉME (Belle Époque Music Ensemble). This collaboration highlights her versatility as a performer and her ability to work within ensemble settings.
Through her teaching and performances, Masako continues to inspire and educate, bridging the gap between classical training and contemporary musical expression.
