Teaching Philosophy

I believe that vocal training should emphasize, first and foremost, healthy vocal production, and be informed by vocal pedagogical practices. A healthy technique is foundational to singing in any genre and style, and sets the singer up for a lifetime of performance. In addition to vocal technique, a vocal education must also include dramatic coaching. Singers are by default actors and storytellers, communicating to their audience, a vocal education should also focus on what is being said, what is communicated, and what must be conveyed to an audience, not just technical instruction.
 
And above all, I believe that *anyone* can be a singer. I do not believe that talent or “having a good voice” are necessary, and instead that anyone who is willing to learn and put forth the effort is capable of being a good singer and musician.

Biography

Austin Martin is a classically trained bass-baritone with experience in opera, concert, musical theatre, and choral settings, hailing from Tyler, TX.

A veteran of the operatic stage, Austin has performed in works including The Marriage of Figaro (Figaro), Rigoletto (Sparafucile), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Theseus), Albert Herring (Budd), Don Pasquale (Don Pasquale), and many more. He has performed with companies across the country, including with Boston Summer Opera, Boston Conservatory Opera, the Bar Harbor Music Festival, Bay View Music Festival, Painted Sky Opera, Taos Opera Institute, and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. Austin is also experienced in musical theatre, having performed in works such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Bonnie and Clyde, Footloose, The Wedding Singer, and The Hunters and the Hunted.

Austin performs year-round with the Old North Church Chamber Chorus, and has previously performed with the Boston Conservatory Conductor’s Choir and Oklahoma City University Chamber Choir.
