Teaching Philosophy

My musical training and professional journey have allowed me to engage with a rich diversity of teaching approaches, performance settings, and musicians from a wide range of cultural, economic, and generational backgrounds. From touring internationally with a Colombian youth choir in my early years to performing as a soloist with leading Historical Performance ensembles and coaching in Musical Theatre today, I draw from a broad spectrum of experiences that deeply inform my teaching. These experiences help me connect with students not only musically but also personally, fostering meaningful relationships that go beyond technical instruction. I view my role not just as a voice teacher, but as a mentor committed to guiding students in their growth as complete musicians. At the heart of my teaching philosophy is a dedication to helping each student discover and develop their own authentic vocal identity.

Biography

Colombian-born soprano Camila Parias is known for her versatile voice and distinctive tone, which she brings to an impressively wide range of musical styles. Her repertoire spans from Medieval music to contemporary works, enabling her to collaborate with a diverse array of ensembles including The Boston Camerata, Handel and Haydn Society, Upper Valley Baroque, La Donna Musicale, and Dünya, among others. From 2012 to 2023, she was a member of the all-professional Choir of The Church of the Advent in Boston. Parias has performed at renowned venues such as Boston Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, Philharmonie de Paris, Palais de Chaillot, Oulu City Theatre, and Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango, to name a few.

She was featured in a Boston Globe article titled “Camila Parias hits a high note in Boston,”highlighting her performance in The Boston Camerata’s production of Carmina Burana—a collaboration that marked her debut with the internationally acclaimed early music ensemble. With the Camerata, Parias has performed major roles including the Queen and the Angel in The Play of Daniel, as well as Belinda in Dido and Aeneas. She has toured extensively across Finland, France, Germany, and Austria with the production Borrowed Light, a cross-disciplinary collaboration between The Boston Camerata and The Tero Saarinen Dance Company. Her national tours include a wide range of holiday and Americana programs, where her voice has been praised for its “intimately crystalline, shiver-inducing” quality (The Boston Musical Intelligencer).

As a soloist, Parias recently appeared at the New York Festival of Song, premiering Lautaro Mantilla’s Bravement. She also features on several Harmonia Mundi recordings with The Boston Camerata, and on Label Lindoro, performing Latin American Baroque music from the Cathedral of Bogotá. Additionally, she is acclaimed for her role as Suzan in the GRAMMY®-nominated opera Othello in the Seraglio by Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol, performed with the ensemble Dünya. This unique work blends 17th-century Italian opera with traditional Turkish music, showcasing Parias’s flair for cross-cultural performance.
