SUMMARY:Guitar Master Class with Robert Ward
DESCRIPTION:BMS welcomes longstanding faculty member\, Robert Ward for a Guitar Master Class! \nRobert Ward holds degrees in guitar performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, BM\, and the University of California San Diego\, MA.  He has studied guitar with Angel\, Pepe and Celin Romero\, Michael Lorimer\, Lee Ryan\, and George Sakellariou\, and early music with Laurette Goldberg.  He has also participated in master classes with Pepe Romero\, Abel Carlevaro\, Jose Tomas\, Jordi Savall\, and Jurgen Huebscher.  Mr. Ward has performed extensively throughout the New England area\, Texas\, California and Hawaii.  In Paris\, he premiered three works written for him at the famed Theatre de Renalgh. At the 4th & 5th International Guitar Congresses in Corfu\,  Greece he was a featured performer and teacher. In San  Diego\, Mr. Ward was active with both the La Jolla Playhouse and the San Diego Public Theater\, as well as participating in rare performances of El Cimmaron by Hans Werner Henze.  In Boston\, he produced and was one of seven performers in a concert event memoriam tribute to Andres Segovia shortly after the Maestro’s passing in 1988. \nHe served for two years as the Artistic Director of the Boston Classical Guitar Society and remains active with the society as both a performer and an honorary board member.  Recent performances include a series of concerts with Music at Eden’s Edge\, Guitar Foundation of America International Festival\, Primavera en la Habana\, Havana\, Cuba\, GFA in Montreal\, the EOS ensemble\, the Enchanted Circle; National Association of Composers at Jordan Hall and the premieres of Underwater (dedicated to Mr. Ward) by Andy Vores and The Jaguar and the Moon for soprano and guitar by Peter Child. Other recent premieres include works by Anthony Paul De Ritis (7 Up\, Transparencies\, and Gazing upon and Unquiet Sky) Francine Trester (Sonatina for Violin and Guitar and Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra)\, Frank Wallace (Sonata for 2 guitars)\, Jeremy van Buskirk (It Might All Slip Away) all of which are works which were written for him.  Mr. Ward has been a soloist with the New England Philharmonic\, the Belmont Symphony Orchestra\, Art of Music Chamber Players\, the Northeastern Symphony\, Harvard Group for New Music\, the Bridgewater Sinfonia\, the Mozart Society Orchestra at Harvard\, Composers in Red Sneekers and the Newton Symphony Orchestra..  He has been a featured artist on radio shows “ Morning Pro Musica\, Classics in the Morning\, Off the Record\, Chamberworks and A Note To You”. He has recorded for Centaur Records.. Robert Ward is a faculty member at Northeastern University and The Brookline Music School.

SUMMARY:Faculty Forum Workshop: Speak\, Memory! with Nan Ni
DESCRIPTION:Accomplished pianist and BMS faculty member Nan Ni is no stranger to the challenges of memorizing thousands of notes for recital performance. In this interactive workshop open to all instrumentalists and singers\, Nan shares some of her own wisdom and tried-and-true memorization techniques and strategies. She will guide students through useful memorization exercises\, and also discuss the “why” of musical memorization\, and the reasons behind the tradition and expectation of memorized performance. \nStudents are encouraged (but not required) to bring a piece of music they are currently working to memorize.

DESCRIPTION:​Laura McHugh\, Guest Artist \nLaura McHugh\, a “jaw-droppingly talented” (The Boston Globe) soprano “ready for heavenly ascent” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) lauded for her “superb\, floating” sound (Melrose Free Press)\, recently won 1st Place in the Classical Singer National Competition\, 1st Place in the Vermont Vocal Competition\, and 2nd Place in Classical Idol (VOX New England). \nKnown for her penchant for “hilarious interpretation” (Voce di Meche)\, as well as her stratospheric high notes\, she recently created comedic roles in two World Premiere Operas: The Reaper in Reap What You Soul (a ’90s pop-diva inspired take on the Angel of Death)\, and Hannah in Non Motus (who panics when nature inevitably calls during an extended traffic jam). Continuing to make her mark in the realm of contemporary opera\, Laura has also appeared in John Corigliano’s The Lord of Cries (nominated for the 2024 GRAMMY Award for Best Opera Recording)\, Tobias Picker’s Awakenings (Rose cover/East Coast Premiere/Recording) and Emmeline (Emmeline cover/Harriet Mosher- cancelled due to COVID-19)\, and Dominick Argento’s The Voyage of Edgar Allan Poe (Mrs. Poe cover/recording). She regularly collaborates with composers on commissions\, World Premieres\, and performances of new works.  \nOperatic credits include the titular roles in Rusalka\, Suor Angelica\, and Gräfin Mariza\, as well as Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte)\, Mimì & Musetta (La bohème)\, Countess Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro)\, Micaëla & Frasquita (Carmen)\, Giulietta (Les contes d’Hoffmann)\, and Vitellia (La Clemenza di Tito). She made her European and Wagnerian debuts as the Valkyrie Gerhilde in a touring production of Die Walküre in Sweden\, and made her second appearance as a Valkyrie as Ortlinde with TUNDI Productions in Vermont. Oratorio credits include the soprano solos in Beethoven Symphony No. 9\, Mozart Requiem\, Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem\, Fauré Requiem\, Vivaldi Gloria\, and Handel Messiah. \nA performer with strong musical theatre chops\, she recently flexed her crossover muscles as Florinda in Into the Woods with Tulsa Opera\, where she was also a Filstrup Resident Artist. She recently appeared in Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s inaugural Boston production of A Christmas Carol as Mrs. Fezziwig. This spring\, she appeared as the Beggar Woman in Opera51’s Sweeney Todd. She completes her summer season as a Summer Pops Soloist with Eleva Chamber Players in Duxbury\, VT. \nStudents may sign up through their private lesson teachers. This master class will hold 5-6 student performers of any age\, recommendation of at least one year of private voice study to participate.
