2010-2011 Class Offerings 

Brookline Music School offers a variety of classes and private instruction for all ages and abilities. Continuing classes for Fall 2010 include Early Childhood Music and Movement classes, Music for Little Mozarts, Beginning Piano, Music Technology, Composition, Theory and Ear Training, Suzuki flute and violin, Dance classes, and ensembles for kids, teens and adults, plus private instrument and voice instruction.

TECHNOLOGY LAB

BMS has a state-of-the-art technology studio, outfitted with six new iMacs equipped with Garage Band recording software, Sibelius notation software and the music theory skill drill program Auralia. In-depth Music Technology, Literacy and ear training study is available for all ages and levels.

We are proud to be at the forefront of music technology and encourage students to take advantage of the programs we have to offer through taking a class or utilizing open lab hours.

Ear Training – Auralia
Auralia's interactive lessons make ear training easy and fun! This program guides students through hundreds of graduated exercises, and gives instant feedback. Auralia automatically records progress as students move through ability levels at their own pace. Auralia is an indispensable tool for musicians of any age and ability!
Notation – Sibelius
The world's best-selling music notation software, Sibelius lets you write, refine, hear, scan and print beautiful scores. In addition to editing and printing, Sibelius can also play music back using high-quality samples, scan in printed scores for editing and publish scores on the Internet.
Recording and Arranging – GarageBand
Welcome to your personal recording studio – where it’s easy to make a song whether you’re a first-time musician or a seasoned pro. With GarageBand, you can create your own virtual onstage band and play along on your favorite instrument. You can record, edit, and mix a song exactly as you want it, in pristine CD quality. It’s the perfect place to get your act together!


EARLY CHILDHOOD: Classes for 6 Months to 36 Months Old

MUSIC & MOVEMENT  6 months - 29 months
Encouraged by an attending parent or adult, babies and toddlers are playfully engaged with songs, chants and games that connect music to their everyday world. Classes focus on stimulating a child’s social, emotional and physical development in an informal atmosphere.

CREATIVE DANCE  3-5 years

Free movement, self-expression and imagination are encouraged as children respond to music and sound.

SIBLING DANCE 3-7 years 
An opportunity giving siblings ways to dance and make dances together.  Dance games will be used so that younger, older and same age children can move together safely with lots of creative fun.

Additional siblings receive a 25% discount.

PRE-BALLET   4-7 years 
An introduction to the fundamental concepts of ballet including the five basic positions, ballet barre,
center and across-the-floor exercises.

This class for young dancers stresses basic ballet concepts and encourages personal expression.
Previous ballet experience is helpful but not required.

MAKING DANCES FOR BOYS   6-8 years
An opportunity for boys to dance and create kinesthetic movement. New dances will arise from combining the dance principles of shape, flow and composition as each student increases his unique movement vocabulary.

DANCE ENSEMBLE FOR BOYS   8-10 Years   
Contin
uing in the tradition of Making Dances for Boys, this class will use props and music to make dances. Using what is learned in class, students build strong ensembles. The end result will be creating a complete dance. Prior dance experience is required.

DANCE ENSEMBLE   8-10 years
In this class, modern vocabulary blends with traditional ballet. Each dancer will be making up original movements to his/her own music and work on ensemble pieces. Open to boys and girls.

SUZUKI: Classes for 4 Years & Up

SUZUKI
FLUTE GROUPS  4-7 Years
Parent participation is required for this 8-week, 45 minute class, taken in addition to private lessons.
Class Length:  8-weeks, 45 minutes/biweekly   Instructor: Amy Poliakoff    Cost: $150 per term. 

Open to non-BMS students for $185 per term.

SUZUKI VIOLIN GROUPS   4-7 Years  NEW!
Classes will be held every other week for a total of 8 classes. Groups are for Pre-Twinklers through Book One. Classes serve to reinforce concepts taught in lessons, fostering a sense of community among peers and providing an opportunity to learn performance techniques in a supportive environment.

Class Length:  8-weeks, 45 minutes/biweekly   Instructor: Michelle Rush   Cost: $150 per term. 
Open to non-BMS students for $185 per term.

GROUP INSTRUCTION: Classes for 4 Years & Up

MUSIC FOR LITTLE MOZARTS   4-6 years
Music for Little Mozarts is a joyful piano course specifically designed for children 4-6 years old and includes movement, song, play and pretend activities, designed to provide a balance between the discipline necessary for playing piano and the enjoyment derived from the process of music-making. The story characters, Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear, model the teaching concepts of each lesson, inviting children to participate through instructional activities.
Class Length: 15-weeks, 50 minutes    Instructor: Maryellen Schepsis    Cost: $375 per term
When (4-5 years): Tuesdays at 3:00pm   Start Dates: Tuesday, Sept. 21
When (5-6 years): Thursdays at 3:00pm   Start Dates: Thursday, Sept. 23

Tuition costs include a required lesson book and workbook ($15). An optional materials kit: magnetic/dry erase activity board, two stuffed animals (Beethoven Bear and Mozart Mouse) and vinyl carrying bag is available from Alfred Publishing.

BEGINNING PIANO    7-8 years
Students learn the basics of rhythm, notation and ear training in a relaxed, creative group setting that incorporates music and movement with basic keyboard skills. By the end of the second term, students will be able to read simple melodies, improvise a melody with chords and work with basic rhythmic patterns.

ROCKSTAR!  7-12 years  
If you love to sing for your friends and family, or even in the shower, this is the class for you. Perfect for young rockers-in-training who may not be ready for private lessons. We’ll explore what makes our voices tick, what the qualities of a “star performance” are, and we’ll let YOU choose what you want to sing! Whether you like, pop, rock, jazz or broadway, you’ll be able to work to make it sound great in a relaxed setting. Each semester culminates with a public performance.
Class Length: 10-weeks, 60 minutes    Instructor: Aubrey Johnson    Cost: $280 per term

THEORY, COMPOSITION & TECHNOLOGY: Classes for 6 Years & Up

GARAGE BAND   6 Years & Up 
Thi
s class will use Apple's 'GarageBand' application to teach all aspects of the 3 R's: "recording, 'riting and 'ranging." Start with the basics and finish with an album of songs by the end of the term! No Mac, no problem – work during supervised lab hours, or walk right into one the area's Apple stores. (They encourage kids to work right there in the store!) With an endless supply of pre-programmed loops, you can sound like a pro on hundreds of instruments. No previous recording experience necessary. All students will take part in an end-of-session 'recording release party.’

JAZZ THEORY IN A NUTSHELL   8-18 Years  NEW!
Jazz theory isn’t as complicated as it often seems. Any musician can learn the basics in just a few hours. Whether you play jazz, rock or classical music, you can learn to interpret chord symbols and identify the “key of the moment,” which will allow you to read chord charts and improvise over any song form. This hands-on class will meet once a week for four weeks. Bring your instrument!

MUSIC THEORY/COMPOSITION/EAR TRAINING   8 Years & Up
This class provides amateur musicians with the opportunity to turn their creative aspirations into songs and compositions. Those with a love of computers and music are able to create original music with the aid of state-of the art computer programs and MIDI technology.
Class Length: 15-weeks, 50 minutes    Instructor: Various    Cost: $350

ENSEMBLES: Classes for 8 - 18 Years

CHAMBER ENSEMBLES  8-18 years 
Chamber music groups are open to all instrumentalists at all levels. Players will be assigned to ensembles of two to six players based on age, experience and ability level. Guided by a coach, groups work on listening, balance and sight reading. Multiple performance opportunities.
Class Length: 15-weeks, 60 minutes    Instructor: Various    Cost: $415 per term

FLUTE CHOIR  8-18 years 
Play original flute choir music and transcriptions on flutes of all sizes from piccolo to bass. For 8 years and older with good music reading ability. Multiple in-house and public performance opportunities.

JAZZ/ROCK/FUNK ENSEMBLES 8-18 years 
These small, flexible and popular ensembles are open to players of all ages and instruments. Work on improvisation skills in a relaxed atmosphere and enjoy multiple performance opportunities. Non-improvising groups are also available.

Songwriting NEW! (Ages13-adult years)
Find your muse! Have you found her already? Put her to work!!
Five 60-minute sessions will cover text writing and setting, making the most of your chord progressions, writing melodies, putting it all together in performance and the basics of Mac-based recording in a relaxed, collaborative atmosphere. All styles welcome! Ideal for those with a creative impulse that needs focus, those wanting to get a better understanding of their current songwriting process, or those looking to do more with an established songwriting craft.
Instructor: Frank Pesci    Cost: $130 (three minimum; five maximum per class)
Qualifications: The ability to accompany yourself on piano or guitar is essential.

ADULT INSTRUCTION

ADULT CHAMBER ENSEMBLES
Have you ever wanted to play in a band? Keep music in your life by joining an adult ensemble. Bring friends or meet new ones! Groups are organized during the first two weeks of each term and meet weekly in a relaxed, friendly environment. Open to all instrumentalists, intermediate to advanced. Flexible rehearsal schedules and multiple performance opportunities.

ADULT JAZZ ENSEMBLES
Dust off those instruments and bring some jazz into your life! Ensembles meet weekly. Open to all instrumentalists. Multiple performance opportunities available.

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

Private lessons are the cornerstone of our educational offerings, and we welcome students of all ages, abilities and levels of experience. The School believes that the right match of student and teacher is vital to a student’s progress, pleasure of learning and enjoyment of music. After an initial consultation, the student is assigned to a faculty member whose teaching style most closely complements the student’s learning style and personality. New students are asked to complete a registration form and contact the office to schedule lessons.
